University City: On the Light Rail to Uptown

Charlotte's northeast corner around UNC Charlotte, on the LYNX Blue Line to uptown.

Living in University City

University City is the northeast corner of Charlotte, built up around UNC Charlotte. Housing includes established single-family neighborhoods, mostly ranch, traditional and two-story homes, alongside newer planned communities, townhomes, condos and a large supply of apartments near the university and the LYNX Blue Line stations. Home sizes run from smaller attached homes and condos to larger detached homes, and age and size vary widely by neighborhood.

Its biggest advantage is the LYNX Blue Line. The light rail was extended to UNC Charlotte in 2018, adding 11 stations, several of them in University City, so the line now runs from here to uptown.

That makes University City one of the few places this far from the center where a commute without a car is realistic. For a buyer who works uptown and dreads I-77 or I-85 at rush hour, being near a station can change the whole calculation.

What Is Close By

Life here has more going on than a typical suburban corner. PNC Music Pavilion hosts concerts, and Charlotte 49ers games draw crowds to the UNC Charlotte campus. For time outside, the Toby Creek, Mallard Creek and Clarks Creek greenways connect for walking and biking.

A university, a concert venue and a rail line bring more activity than a typical residential corner, which is part of the appeal for some buyers and worth weighing for others, especially if you are comparing a home here with one in a quieter neighborhood nearby.

Buying or Selling in University City

For buyers, the first question is usually how close to a station you want to be, and whether you will actually use it. A home within an easy walk of a stop is a different purchase from one a short drive away. We look at the commute you will really make, then at the homes along it. Relocating to the Charlotte area covers how we help buyers new to the region weigh that.

For sellers, proximity to the rail line, the campus and the greenways is part of what a buyer is paying for, and it belongs in how the home is priced and presented. Selling your home in Charlotte covers how we do both.

University City and Its Neighbors

Highland Creek, nearby, trades the rail line for a golf course and four pools, and Mallard Creek follows the greenway with newer townhomes and small-lot homes.
