Living in Historic Downtown Concord

Historic Downtown Concord is the older heart of the city, and it includes the North Union Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The district has about 190 historic buildings and properties, primarily from the 1880s onward and reflecting Concord's textile boom, in Greek Revival, Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Craftsman styles.

Downtown runs along Union Street and is anchored by the 1876 Cabarrus County Courthouse. This is the part of Concord with traditional homes, a quieter pace than the Concord Mills side of the city, and shops, restaurants and bars within reach.

Buying or Selling a Historic Home in Concord

An older home rewards a careful buyer and punishes a rushed one. Roofs, foundations, wiring, plumbing and windows may be original or may have been replaced, and the difference changes both the price and the budget after you move in. The due diligence period should be long enough for a thorough inspection and, where needed, a specialist. How we help you buy covers how we set the period and fee.

Historic status can also affect what you are allowed to change on the outside of a home, depending on how the property is designated. That is worth confirming with the city before you plan any exterior work.

For sellers, character is an asset when it is presented well and a liability when condition questions are left for a buyer's inspector to raise. The pre-listing inspection consultation helps decide what to fix and what to disclose. Selling your home in Concord covers the rest.
